We want to inform you of a recent change in California law that may impact your hiring process. Effective January 1, 2025, employers can no longer require an applicant to possess a driver's license for non-driving positions. While this change introduces new compliance considerations, it does not mean MVR screenings should discontinue.

MVR checks remain a key tool for identity verification and risk assessment. To ensure continued compliance while maintaining effective screening procedures, we have updated our ordering process. Previously labeled as a "Motor Vehicle Records Search," the search tag has now been changed to read:

"Driver’s License Number (MVR) -or- State Identification Number"

This update allows for seamless verification while staying within legal guidelines, as both the driver’s licenses and State ID number sequences are used for the same purpose in California.

Most likely, this change in CA law will not even become an issue. If it does, you’re ready to process a background report without interruption, as the workable solution is already in place.

As always, please feel free to contact me if more discussion is warranted.

Thank you,
Al Firato
