To unlicensed and dishonest contractors, who take advantage of people's need in times of crises to make money off hard luck. While to some, the recent state sting operation to find such contractors may have seemed like overkill, such efforts may have saved you or people you know and love thousands of dollars for shoddy work, performed by people not qualified in the first place.

Miller suggested that anyone looking to have work done on their home or business contact multiple contractors for estimates and then check their licenses before hiring them to do any work. License numbers are six digits long, Miller said, and can be checked on the board's Web site, www.cslb.ca.gov, to see if the contractor is in compliance.

A man awaiting trial in Butte County for felony theft from an elder and misdemeanor unlicensed contracting was one of 14 suspected unlicensed contractors nabbed during a Contractors State License Board (CSLB) Statewide Investigative Fraud Team (SWIFT) sting in Eureka this week.

The Humboldt County District Attorney’s office says, after the 6.5 earthquake that hit the area in January, many unlicensed contractors flooded into the area to repair the damage.
But a recent sting operation, uncovered at least a dozen unlicensed contractors working in the area. .
News Channel 3’s Ranjini Srinivasan rode along as officials made a bust.

Contractors must have a valid California contractor’s license to work in this state.

An architect insists that the expensive luxury homes his firm designed are structurally sound, despite a state investigation into whether engineering reports on the soil were properly filed.
Big Bear Lake officials asked the state Department of Consumer Affairs last week to step in after suspicions arose about the authenticity of waivers filed by Tom Owens Residential Design, assuring the soil was appropriate for construction.

Court records show deputies charged Larazo Hernandez, 43, Newberry, N.Y., Gregorio Herrera, 30, of Vencar, N.Y., Ralph Stanley, 57, of Chester, N.Y., and Vincent Stanley, of Middletown, N.Y., each with felony first-degree theft of property by deception. Capt. Antonio Gonzalez said the four men were charged as part of a paving scam.
