I am here to help contractors navigate issues, concerns and interpretations of licensing, current law and regulatory processes. I like to think of it as a ‘shared’ responsibility as we all learn from the questions and answers in this space. A resource when your best course is required. What can I do for you? I help these contractors find their way today!
Q: You helped me replace my Dad on our contractor’s license and I was able to Waive the examination requirement. I don’t remember if it was because it was some sort of “grandfathering” of the license or what, but I’m wondering if I can do the same thing on our Nevada license?
A: You were able to Waive the exams based on being an employee of your Dad’s company for over five years and unfortunately, Nevada doesn’t offer that same Waiver option. If you want to replace your Dad on your NV license, you are absolutely going to be required to take the exams.
Q: Our CA contractor license was issued last month and our current Responsible Managing Employee (RME) in CA will also serve as our AZ RME. I believe that he has already taken and passed the AZ statues and rules exam. Will he need to sit for an AZ trade-specific exam, or will he be able to request a Waiver in Arizona because he recently sat for and passed the CA trade-specific exam? Is there any time constraint on the amount of time that an RME must serve in CA in order to obtain the Waiver for the trade-specific exam in Arizona?
A: No time constraint for that actually! As long as the license has been Active for at least one day in California, he will qualify for a Waiver of the Trade portion of the Arizona exam.
We are discussing the plausibility of obtaining our California license by the time the project we need it for comes up. Is it possible to obtain a license in less than a month?
A: Not usually. It’s possible, at the current moment anyway, to get approved for testing in less than a month. But then test scheduling, bonding, fingerprinting, etc. usually adds a couple of weeks to the process. The CSLB has an Expedite Committee that will consider your reason for needing an application to be expedited, but those are approved only in rare instances, such as public safety concerns or the like. If you believe you have a valid reason for expediting, please call my office to discuss this further.
