Let’s make another point to help a contractor, who found his way to a license with a little help from his friends! A Worker’s Compensation issue is solved and I share advice on what flies in CA, but won’t get off the ground in NV…
Q: I hope you’re doing well and thank you and your team for helping me obtain my license! I had a quick CSLB question and was hoping you might point me in the right direction.
We currently have an Active license under our Limited Liability Company (LLC), with me as the Qualifier. We are forming a new operating LLC and want that entity to be the licensed contractor instead.
My understanding is that we cannot transfer the existing license between LLCs and would instead need to apply for a new original contractor license for the new entity, with me Qualifying it.
Could you confirm if that’s correct and, at a high level, what the typical processing timeline looks like right now from submission to activation?
We’re trying to align timing with an anticipated closing date, so just a general sense of process and timing would be incredibly helpful.
A: Nice to hear from you. You are correct, a new license would be required. The timing will depend on how long it takes you to obtain Bonds and insurance for the new entity, but based on the CSLB’s current processing times, you can estimate the process will take about 6-8 weeks. I look forward to working with you again.
Q: We have always filed an exemption from Worker’s Compensation for our family contracting business. We have my Dad and three brothers as Officers/Owners so we’ve never needed Worker Comp. We recently hired a couple of guys as direct employees of the company and obtained a Worker’s Comp policy. How do we go about notifying the CSLB?
A: You need to submit a Certificate of Worker’s Compensation to the CSLB. You can mail it in, email it to workerscomp@cslb.ca.gov, or have your insurance company file it online. Let me know if you need any assistance with getting it on record.
Q: I have been doing plumbing work for our family business for over twenty years. We are licensed in CA and my brother is the Qualifier. We need to get licensed in NV and I would like to Qualify the license. Can I obtain a Waiver of the exams based on my extensive experience in the trade?
A: Unfortunately, no. The NSCB does not grant Waivers of the exams based on experience alone. However, if you have been doing plumbing work for over twenty years, I’m willing to bet you will not have any issues passing the test! You’ve already aced the longevity test.
