Qualifier leaves now what? It’s not like you have one in your pocket, or do you? Another contractor is asking about opportunity, as he wants to be in the ‘game’ but his chance to bat may be slim or none. Despite suffering an unexpected loss, our last inquiry is sharp, as she knows the answers already…
Q: We need to replace our Qualifier for the “B” (General Building) classification on our license and I’m going to be the person to do it. Can you take a look at the CSLB’s records and my previous license history and let me know the chances that I will be approved to waive the “B” trade exam?
A: Of course. In looking at the history it appears your company, which is a Partnership, changed the partnership structure back in 2021 resulting in a new license number. I see that you were the Qualifier on the previous license for the “A” and “C-8” (Concrete) classifications.
In order to obtain a Waiver of the “B” Trade exam, you would have to have either been previously Qualified on a license (within the last five years) for the same classification, OR you would need to meet one of the B&P code section 7065.1 requirements. All of the 7065.1 options require that the license in question be in existence for at least five out of the last seven years. Your newer license has only been in existence since 2021 so you would not be eligible for a Waiver of the General Building exam.
Q: We have been requested to bid on some specialty work for the new stadium being built in Nevada which is a huge opportunity for us. However, the bid is due in under a month. Is it possible to obtain a Nevada license in under a month? Are we permitted to submit a bid with a contractor’s license application pending?
A: It is close to impossible to obtain a NV license in under a month. You would need to have a Qualifying Individual who was already qualified and therefore not have to sit for any exams and you would have to submit an expedite request and hope the NSCB granted it, which they don’t often do. To answer the other question, no, you are not permitted to submit bids in NV without a valid contractor’s license.
Q: My husband recently passed away unexpectedly and he was the only person listed on our corporate contractor’s license. I have updated the CA Secretary of State records to list myself as the President, Secretary, and Treasurer so I’m thinking I probably need to add myself to the license as such, correct? I’m just wondering if it’s possible to add my daughter to the license as well in case something were to happen to me? Just FYI, we have a family member who has worked for us for many years who is stepping up to become the RME and he’s already submitted his application.
A: You are correct, you should file with the CSLB to add yourself as the new officers/President/Secretary/Treasurer. You can add your daughter as an Officer to the license, t and hat would probably be a good idea to have multiple authorized signers for the license.
