I will plumb the depths of knowledge in satisfying a contractor, cut the paperwork for another and break down a common misconception about licenses. This is a space built to provide contractors a foundation, or base resource, in licensing regulations, interpretations and changing laws primarily in CA, NV and AZ. Problem? Let’s go!

Q: Hi there, I’m interested in getting my plumbing license in California, however, I’m wondering if I were to get my General contractor’s license, would that be the “top” license to get to cover all trades?

A: Thank you for contacting us. One license doesn't necessarily "top" another, it really just depends on what type of work you intend to do. The “B” (General Building) license does cover more trades, but along with that you'll have to show experience in more trades than just plumbing. Specifically, framing along with at least two unrelated trades. Also with the General Building license, you have to be doing at least two unrelated trades on any job (outside of framing or carpentry), so you wouldn't be able to take on just a plumbing project.

Q: If we want to add our new CEO to the license as the Responsible Managing Officer (RMO), he already has his own personal license. Do we need to first add him as the CEO and then submit an application for him to become the RMO?

A: Just one application would be required. If he’s replacing the current Qualifier on the license, it would be an application for replacing the Qualifier. On the application, it asks for his title and that’s where you would specify CEO. Two birds, one stone!

Q: Is it possible for an individual who already has a license to allow our company to utilize it?

A: You cannot use the individual’s license to operate under your company name. However, if he/she owns at least 20% of the company, that would allow them to qualify both licenses at the same time.

Q: I had a contractor’s license years ago, then went to work for a Company who was already licensed. I want to reactivate my license. What does that require? I’ve tried calling the CSLB, but I’ve gotten a couple of different answers, so my buddy referred me to you.

A: Good call, pleases pass along my appreciation to your friend. I looked up your license and it has been expired for over five years so you will be required to take the exams again to get the license back. You will also need to be fingerprinted and obtain a bond. Since it’s a Sole Owner license, more good news is, you can request that the number be re-issued to you.
